Getting to Know You

Occasionally on The Friday Zone we’ll meet a family who has come to Indiana from another country. They’ll tell us about their daily life, share some of their family traditions, and describe what life was like where they used to live. Let’s celebrate the diversity of our community in The Family Zone!

Meet a Family From The Philippines

Ricky, Dinah, Richard, and Denise live in Bloomington. Ricky and Dinah used to live in Cebu, Philippines. They moved to the United States and eventually settled in Bloomington. Richard and Denise were born in America, but travel back to the Philippines with their parents.

Ricky explained that there are many islands that make up the Philippines. Dinah told us that there are also many languages, and that most people speak several dialects, including Pagalog, the national language.

Denise told us about a “jeepney.” The jeepney is a small bus that people use to travel short distances in the Philippines. She also said she likes to eat mangoes when she is in the Philippines.

Richard told us he plays alto saxophone and that he enjoys being part of a family that has two cultures.
