Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating

Things to Consider Before You Go

  • A police officer talks to kids about how to have a safe Halloween.Make sure you can see out of any masks you wear.
  • Avoid big shoes and long skirts that can make you trip.
  • All props should be safe (example: toy weapons should not have sharp edges).
  • If it is dark bring a flashlight, glow stick, or have reflective tape on your costume.

Safety While Trick-or-Treating

  • Never go trick-or-treating alone; always go with a responsible adult.
  • If your parents do let you go without them make sure to go in big groups.
  • Walk, don’t run.
  • Stay on the sidewalks and obey traffic signals.
  • Only go to well-lit houses.
  • Always go to the front door.
  • Remember to be polite and say “thank you”.
  • Don’t eat any of your candy until an adult can check it.

After You Get Home

  • Have an adult check your candy before eating it.
  • Do not eat any candy or food that is unwrapped or looks tampered with.
