Easy Halloween Costumes

Costume Designer Mary Grusak showed us how to make some great costumes without a lot of work. Mouse over the images to see the difference in ‘before’ and ‘after.’

You will need:

  • purple sweatsuit
  • purple balloons (15 or so)

Inflate the balloons and attach them to the sweatsuit with packing tape.

You can even wear a green hat and paint a few vines on your face.

Lion

You will need:

  • yellow sweatsuit
  • brown fake fur

Attach the fake fur around your neck and head.

Make ears out of fur and sew or tape them on.

Scarecrow

You will need:

  • blue sweatshirt
  • brown sweatpants
  • loose raffia straw (can be purchased at any craft store)
  • floppy hat
  • brown collar

Glue pieces of loose straw coming out from the sleeves of the sweatshirt, under the collar, and the hat.

Tin Man

You will need:

  • cardboard box
  • funnel (for a hat)
  • aluminum foil

Cut holes for your arms and head in a box. Cover it and a funnel (for a hat) with foil.

You can then wrap your pants and shirt in foil.

You can also make a simple axe out of cardboard and cover it with foil.

Cat in the Hat

Our group of kids in their spectacular new costumes!You will need:

  • black sweatsuit
  • piece of white felt
  • red fabric or thick red ribbon
  • red construction paper
  • white poster board
  • white gloves

Create a white bib with the felt and attach it to the front of the sweatsuit.

Make a large red bow out of red fabric or thick red ribbon and attach it to the neck of the sweat suit.

Take a strip of poster board approximately ten inches high and fold into a cylinder for the top hat. With the same poster board create a circle brim.

Cut out two-inch strips of red construction paper and tape them around the cylinder.

Add whiskers and a black nose with face paint.
